Guidance for Families

Is Hospice Right for Your Loved One?

Many families tell us they wish they had called hospice sooner. If your loved one is facing a life-limiting illness, these signs may mean it’s time for a conversation:

  • Frequent hospitalizations or ER visits in recent months
  • Increasing pain, breathlessness, or other symptoms that are hard to control
  • Noticeable weight loss, weakness, or sleeping much more than usual
  • Needing more help with bathing, dressing, eating, or moving around
  • A doctor has mentioned that the focus should shift to comfort

You don’t need to be sure. Our free consultation includes an eligibility review, and we coordinate directly with your physician.

How Hospice Works

Four Levels of Hospice Care

Hospice isn’t one thing, it’s a set of care levels that flex with your loved one’s needs. Our team recommends the right level and adjusts as things change.

Routine Home Care

The most common level of hospice. Your loved one stays comfortably at home while our nurses, aides, social workers, and chaplains visit on a regular schedule, managing symptoms and supporting the family.

  • Scheduled nursing and aide visits at home
  • 24/7 phone access to our on-call nurse
  • Medications and equipment coordinated for you

Continuous Home Care

During a medical crisis, such as uncontrolled pain, severe anxiety, or acute symptoms, a nurse can stay at the bedside for extended hours until your loved one is stable and comfortable again.

  • Intensive bedside nursing during symptom crises
  • Rapid response, day or night
  • Seamless return to routine care once stable

Inpatient Respite Care

Caring for someone you love around the clock is exhausting. Respite care provides a short inpatient stay for your loved one, up to five days, so family caregivers can rest, travel, or simply recharge.

  • Short-term inpatient stay in a contracted facility
  • Full hospice care continues without interruption
  • Peace of mind for tired caregivers

General Inpatient Care

When symptoms can’t be managed at home, your loved one can receive intensive, round-the-clock care in an inpatient setting until comfortable, then return home if they wish.

  • 24-hour skilled nursing in an inpatient setting
  • For symptoms that need intensive management
  • Family can visit and stay close throughout

Common Questions

Hospice Questions, Answered Honestly

Hospice is specialized care for people facing a life-limiting illness, focused on comfort rather than cure. A team of nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers manages pain and symptoms while supporting the patient and family emotionally and spiritually, most often right at home.
Earlier is almost always better. Families often say they wish they’d called sooner. If treatments are no longer helping, symptoms are getting harder to manage, or hospital visits are becoming frequent, it’s time for a free eligibility conversation. You don’t need to be certain, we’ll help you understand the options.
Not at all. Choosing hospice means choosing comfort, dignity, and quality of life. It shifts the goal from curing the illness to living each remaining day as fully and peacefully as possible, with expert support for both the patient and the family.
For eligible patients, the Medicare Hospice Benefit covers hospice services at little to no out-of-pocket cost, including the team visits, medications related to the terminal diagnosis, and medical equipment. Most private insurance plans and Illinois Medicaid offer similar hospice coverage. We’ll verify your benefits for free before care begins.
Yes. Your loved one’s primary physician can remain involved and work alongside our hospice medical director. We coordinate the full plan of care so nothing falls through the cracks.
